Keep your blood sugar level under
control
If you have diabetes,
you know that the absorption of carbohydrates has a big influence on your blood
sugar level - so
you have to eat intelligently.
The glycemic index (GI) classifies carbohydrate-rich foods based on their
effect on blood sugar levels:
Foods with a high GI
value (70
or more) are
rapidly digested and absorbed, and result in a rapid rise in blood sugar levels. You should limit the
consumption of this type of food, such as white bread, donuts and sweet drinks.
Foods with a low GI
value (55
or less) are
digested, absorbed and burned more slowly, and cause a smaller and slower
increase in blood glucose. This type of food, such as fresh fruit, vegetables, whole
grains and legumes (beans,
peas and lentils),
is a better source of carbohydrates.

How Zespri kiwis can help to control
your blood sugar level
Most types of fruit are
sweet and contain simple sugars. You could also expect them to boost your blood sugar
level (and
have a high GI value). However,
this does not apply to high fiber fruits such as Zespri kiwis.
Zespri kiwifruit can help to regulate your
blood sugar levels, in two ways:
The Zespri Green kiwis
have a GI of 39.2
and the Zespri SunGold kiwis a GI of 493. Thanks to these values they belong
to the category of foods with a 'low' GI. The high fiber content of the Zespri
kiwis slows the absorption of sugar during digestion, causing the glucose to be
absorbed less quickly by the body and released only slowly into the bloodstream.
A new scientific study
has shown that a kiwi at breakfast slows the absorption of sugars from
breakfast into the blood stream.4 This is because the kiwi fibers have a very high water-retaining capacity. The kiwi fibers absorb the
water, causing them to swell and become gel-like. Your breakfast is digested and
broken down into smaller sugars that move more slowly through the gel. This results in a slower
sugar intake in the blood and a slower energy release.
In addition, the Zespri
Green and Zespri SunGold kiwi fibers improve digestion, and studies in older
people have shown that the regular consumption of kiwifruit helps to prevent
constipation.5
